Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA)
Written by Jack Porter - Trainee Underwriter - Casualty
The Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) is a national agency that, regulates Australia's registered health practitioners to ensure public safety and maintain standards and policies.
Each health profession that is part of the National Registration and Accreditation Scheme is represented by a National Board.
AHPRA and the National Boards work together to ensure that Australia’s registered health practitioners are suitably trained, qualified and safe to practise.
While the primary role of the Boards is to protect the public, the Boards are also responsible for registering practitioners and students, as well as other functions, for their professions.
The 15 National Boards are:
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Practice Board of Australia
Chinese Medicine Board of Australia
Chiropractic Board of Australia
Dental Board of Australia
Medical Board of Australia
Medical Radiation Practice Board of Australia
Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia
Occupational Therapy Board of Australia
Optometry Board of Australia
Osteopathy Board of Australia
Paramedicine Board of Australia
Pharmacy Board of Australia
Physiotherapy Board of Australia
Podiatry Board of Australia
Psychology Board of Australia
All Boards are supported by AHPRA in the framework of a Health Profession Agreement. National Boards delegated some of their decision-making powers to national committees, state and territory boards or to AHPRA.
