Hair Restoration Services

Written by Jack Porter - Trainee Underwriter - Casualty

The main differences between surgical (cosmetic) and non-surgical (non-cosmetic) intervention include the level of invasiveness required by each treatment, the healing period after each procedure, and the quality of the final results.

Surgical hair transplants and hairline lowering are well-known cosmetic approaches to hair restoration surgery involving more intricate techniques that extract healthy hair follicles from one part of the scalp and transplant them to areas affected by hair loss.

Some of the possible complications of hair transplant surgery include:

  •   risks of general anaesthesia, including allergic reaction, which may be fatal

  •   surgical risks such as bleeding or infection

  •   nerve damage, including permanent loss of sensation

  •   death of the skin grafts and tissue along the wound

  •   further surgery to treat complications

With that in mind, a Surgeon would be required to obtain their own Medical Malpractice policy to cover their activities, whilst the Medical Practice policy is designed to cover:

  •   Administration employees; and

  •   Nurses

In contrast, non-surgical options like PRP (Platelet-rich Plasma) and laser therapy are less invasive and typically require little to no recovery time. However, the results tend to be temporary and may require maintenance sessions.

Some of the risks entailed in these procedures include:

  •   Skin Irritation or Allergic Reactions

  •   Effectiveness and Delayed Results

  •   Hair Shedding (Shock Loss)

  •   Oral Medication Side Effects

  •   Infection (PRP and Injections)

  •   Scarring (Laser Therapy)

  •   Temporary Redness or Swelling

  •   Overuse of Products

Medical malpractice risks entailed throughout these procedures include:

  •   Improper Diagnosis and Treatment Planning

  •   Failure to Recommend or Administer the Appropriate Treatment

  •   Adverse Reactions to Medications

  •   Failure to Monitor, Adjust Treatment Plan and Manage Complications

  •   Psychological Harm or Emotional Distress

  •   Failure to Properly obtain Informed Consent

  •   Poor Aesthetic Outcomes

  •   Inadequate Aftercare

  •   Lack of Qualification or Expertise
