Osteopathy is one of ten regulated healthcare professions in Australia. Osteopathic philosophy gives a holistic approach to health and stresses the importance of the musculoskeletal system in a person’s health and well-being.

The aim of treatment is to support the body’s self-healing capacity, managing:

  • Neck and back pain

  • Arthritis

  • Sciatica

  • Headaches and Vertigo

  • Repetitive strain and overuse injuries

  • Pregnancy-related discomfort

  • Tendonitis

  • Sports injuries

An osteopath focuses on your whole body, including soft tissues, the spine and nervous system, utilising a variety of hands-on methods, including:

 There is a multitude of complementary medical practices currently in the medical field, with each presenting their own individual risks. These include:

  • Spinal manipulation

  • Soft tissue massage techniques

  • Articulation - gentle rhythmic joint movements

  • Stretching muscles and joint capsules

  • Muscle energy techniques - encouraging muscles to work against resistance

  • Visceral manipulation - gentle movement of the abdominal and pelvic areas

  • Therapeutic needling techniques, such as dry needling or acupuncture

  • Educational advice about lifestyle, stress management or diet

Osteopaths mainly work in private practices but may also work in:

  • Rehabilitation clinics

  • Aged care facilities

  • Research institutes

  • Multidisciplinary medical/health clinics

  • Chronic pain management settings

Osteopaths are university-qualified allied health professionals with training in anatomy, physiology, pathology, general healthcare diagnosis, and osteopathic techniques. They must be registered with the Osteopathy Board of Australia.
