What is the NDIS?

Written by Jack Porter - Trainee Underwriter - Casualty

The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) is a government service that provides support to Australian citizens with a disability via support packages, tailored to individual needs.

To access the NDIS, participants must have a permanent impairment that significantly affects their ability to be involved in everyday activities or have a developmental delay as well as being under 65 in a NDIS specified zone.

The National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) implements the NDIS which provides funding to eligible people with disability to:

  • gain more time with family and friends

  • maintain greater independence

  • access to new skills, jobs, or volunteering in their community

  • have improved quality of life

The NDIS also connects anyone with disability to services in their community. This includes connections to:

  • doctors

  • community groups

  • sporting clubs

  • support groups

  • libraries and,

  • schools

as well as providing information about what support is provided by each state and territory government.

There are around 4.3 million Australians who have a disability.

The NDIS now supports over 500,000 Australians with permanent and significant disability to access the services and supports they need. This includes supporting approximately 80,000 children with developmental delay, ensuring they receive supports early so that they achieve the best outcomes throughout their lives.
